Most jade bangles are round rings, but a second traditional shape - the oval or Guifei bangle - is common in jadeite and Hetian collections. The two shapes fit differently even when the printed size is the same, so the choice is about both style and anatomy.
Round bangles: the classic ring
A round bangle is measured by its inner diameter in millimetres, and it is the reference shape most sizing charts describe. Round bangles sit evenly around the wrist and move freely when you turn your hand. They suit a wide range of hand shapes and are the easiest shape for a first purchase, because size guidance is the most familiar.
Oval (Guifei) bangles: following the wrist
An oval bangle has an elliptical opening, measured at its widest point. Because the ellipse follows the natural profile of the wrist, the bangle sits closer and turns less than a round bangle of the same nominal size. Many wearers say the oval feels more secure and looks more elegant on a slender wrist.
The narrower axis of the oval is what makes fitting less forgiving. An oval that passes your hand may still feel tight across the wrist, and one that feels loose on the wrist may not pass your hand at all. Always compare the full hand measurement, not just the wrist.
Which shape suits a narrow wrist?
Oval bangles are often chosen for narrow wrists because the close-fitting ellipse shows off the line of the wrist. If you are buying your first oval, ask the seller how the opening was measured and send your hand circumference before ordering.
Can the same size be worn in both shapes?
Not reliably. A 55 mm oval and a 55 mm round bangle feel different because of the elliptical shape. Treat the shapes as separate sizing systems and measure for each one.
