Jade is worn in two main styles: the bangle, a single carved ring, and the bead bracelet, a string of beads. Both are traditional, but they fit, feel and behave differently. Choosing between them starts with how you will actually wear the piece.
Bangle: one ring, one size decision
A bangle has no clasp, so the whole hand must pass through the opening. Fit is decided by the inner diameter in millimetres, and there is little room for error: too small and it will not go on, too large and it may slip off. Once the size is right, a bangle stays on securely and feels constant through the day.
Bangles suit people who like a solid, unbroken band of colour on the wrist and do not plan to share the piece. They are the classic shape for jadeite green and for full-band Hetian pieces, and they photograph beautifully because the whole surface shows at once.
Bead bracelet: flexible and shareable
A bead bracelet fits like any bracelet - over the hand and around the wrist - and most strands sit loosely or snugly depending on bead size and strand length. The same strand can often be worn by different wrists, which makes bead bracelets a practical choice for gifts.
Beads show the stone in small repeated windows rather than one big surface. Floating-flower patterns and qinghua strands work well in this format, and round or barrel beads catch light from many angles. If you ever need to adjust the fit, a jeweller can usually restring the strand - something a bangle can never do.
Which style is easier to size for a gift?
Bead bracelets, because wrist fit is more forgiving than hand-and-bangle fit. For a bangle gift you need the inner diameter in millimetres plus the hand measurement; for a bead bracelet, a wrist circumference in centimetres usually points to the right strand.
Does one style hold value better than the other?
Value depends on the stone, not the format. A fine bangle needs a large, flawless piece of material, which is rare, so exceptional bangles set high records. Bead strands with evenly matched large beads are also prized. Choose quality and honesty of description over format when comparing.
