Black-and-white Hetian jade, known in the trade as qinghua (青花), is nephrite that carries dark and light mineral matter in one stone. The name borrows from blue-and-white porcelain, but qinghua jade is not painted - the pattern is part of the mineral itself. Understanding how it forms is the key to buying it safely.
How the pattern forms
During formation, dark mineral matter (usually graphite) mixed into parts of the nephrite, leaving dense black, grey or charcoal clouds inside a white or pale base. The result looks like ink dropped into water or brush strokes across paper. Because every stone formed separately, no two qinghua patterns are alike.
The contrast between black and white is what makes qinghua attractive. Soft, smoky patterns are classic and quiet; sharp black-and-white contrasts are more dramatic. Both are natural appearances of the mineral.
How to tell natural qinghua from paint or dye
Natural qinghua sits inside the stone - you can see depth when the piece is tilted, and the boundary between black and white is usually soft or uneven. Painted or dyed patterns sit on the surface, follow the surface shapes too neatly, and often hide in crevices where dye pools. Dyed stone can also bleed or fade over time.
Look at the photographs under daylight and magnification, and ask the seller whether the pattern has been tested. If you want certainty, request documentation or an independent test before payment.
Is qinghua worth less than plain white Hetian jade?
Not automatically. Demand for qinghua has grown because each pattern is individual and artistic. A clear, expressive qinghua piece can cost more than plain white of similar quality. What matters is the quality of the base material and the beauty of the pattern, so compare stones as wholes.
What is yellow-skin qinghua?
Some qinghua pebbles keep their natural yellow or brown river skin on one side. The warm skin against the black-and-white body is a traditional favourite, because it shows both the seed origin and the pattern in one piece.
Checklist before buying qinghua
- Confirm the black colour is natural to the stone, in writing if possible.
- Request daylight close-ups and a short video while tilting the piece.
- Check whether the pattern has depth or sits only on the surface.
- Ask whether the piece carries natural skin and whether that affects the price.
