Jadeite and nephrite are tough minerals, but the jewellery made from them is not indestructible. A bangle is one ring with no clasp, so most damage comes from hard knocks, sudden temperature change, or careless storage. A few habits keep a piece safe for a lifetime.
Wearing day to day
Put the bangle on over a protected hand and remove it over a soft surface - a towel or a bed - so that a slip cannot drop it onto stone or tile. Take the bangle off before sports, heavy manual work, gardening or any activity with hard impact risk.
Keep jade away from strong chemicals: perfume, hairspray, cleaning sprays and chlorine can dull the surface over time. Put jewellery on after perfume and cosmetics have dried, and remove it before swimming or cleaning with bleach.
Temperature and light
Avoid sudden temperature swings. Do not leave jade in a hot car, near a heater, or in direct strong sunlight for long periods. Rapid expansion and contraction can stress internal structure, and heat can affect surface wax or resin that older pieces may carry. Normal room temperature is all jade needs.
Cleaning
Clean jade with lukewarm water and a soft, damp cloth or a very soft brush. Dry it gently afterwards. Do not use ultrasonic cleaners, steamers, abrasive polish or household detergents, because treatments, polish and even natural surfaces can be damaged by them. For Hetian seed jade, keep the natural skin area clean but never scrub it hard - the pitted surface is part of the piece.
Can I use oil on my jade?
Do not oil jade unless a specialist advises it for a specific piece. Oils can sit on the surface, attract dust, and mask the true polish, and they do not improve a genuine stone. If a seller recommends oiling, ask why and what exactly they use.
How should I store a jade bangle?
Store each bangle separately in its own soft pouch or box, away from other jewellery that could knock it. Do not stack bangles on top of each other. A cool, dry, dark place is ideal.
Checking the piece over time
- Look at the bangle occasionally under good light for new marks or changes near the inner edge.
- Have an older or antique bangle checked if you notice anything unusual.
- Keep the bangle away from rings and watches when it is not worn.
